Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Multi–branched shrub, sometimes tree-like 1–4 m tall.

Stems: Pale brown / grey striped bark, leaf–base scar not prominent, non–resinous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades elliptic (4.8–)6.0–11.5 (–20.0) cm long x (0.8–) 1.1–2.0 (–3.0) cm wide. Apex acute to attenuate or curved. Base attenuate. Surfaces with substellate hairs with darker brown glandular tips. Margins entire or rarely obscurely toothed towards the apex. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 5–8 in axils, not subtended by bracts. Flowers bisexual (perfect); pedicels flattened at base and rounded apically; 7.5–12.5 mm long. Calyx of 5 rarely 6 sepals, imbricate, ovate–triangular, acute to acuminate, margins membranous; veins pronounced in inside surface when dry; 1.5–2.7 mm long x 1–1.5 mm wide. Corolla white, inside of base of lobes and upper tubes light to deep pink, lacking colored spots but with glands present becoming more obvious in dried specimens. lobes (4–) 5 (–6), 1.8–3.5 mm long, shorter or equal to tube. Tube 2.3– 4 mm long. Stamens 5 (rarely 4 or 6) exserted, glabrous. Ovary superior, oblong obtuse 5–10 locular 1.6–2.3 long x 1–1.7 mm wide; ovule 1 per locule; style glabrous.

Fruit: Drupaceous; depressed globular 4–8 long x 3.5–6.5 mm wide. Exocarp cream colored drying to pale brown wrinkled; mesocarp succulent and watery. Exocarp hard ovoid to deltoid; smoothed or ridged. Seeds ovoid to oblong 2–3 mm long 0.8–1 mm wide; white.
